The European Union is the perfect example of a good idea taken to ridiculous lengths.
The Brits have always had a very strained relationship with Europe and its institutions. Its geographical position, as an island separated from continental Europe by the English Channel, has always meant that the Brits thought very differently to their French and German counterparts.
