Hope Dyson Heydon comes out swinging today…

Unions and the left were always pretty dumb…

Unions and the left were always pretty dumb…

This is the twisted logic that Labor and the Unions are using to attack the Royal Commission:

  • the Commission is investigating widespread criminality and corruption in trade unions
  • the unions are (by their own choice) aligned with Labor, and vice versa
  • hence the commission is ‘political’
  • therefore, any sign of connection to the Liberals in the commissioner, no matter how trivial or irrelevant, is therefore evidence of ‘bias’
  • unions escape justice once again.

This is the same flawed logic that would say that any criminal trial for, say, insider trading, should not be handled by any judge that has links to Labor or the unions, since stock brokers are generally aligned with conservative politics. Or that environmental challenges in court cannot be handled by any judge who has ever expressed doubts about global warming hysteria.

To take this logic to its extreme, any losing party in a case could claim that the judge was ‘biased’ against that party’s version of events. Or as Bill Leak put it in his cartoon in The Australian (see above), the judge is ‘biased’ against criminals!

The Garfield Barwick address being characterised as a ‘Liberal fundraiser’ never came from Dyson Heydon or Jeremy Stoljar, or indeed the organisers, who made it clear that it was no such thing  – it came from NSW Bar Association employee Chris Winslow, who wrote an email (paper trail?) to Stoljar enquiring whether Stoljar knew the event was a Liberal party fundraiser. The classic ‘when did you stop beating your wife’ tactic…

So I sincerely hope that Dyson Heydon gives Labor and the union thugs the dressing down they richly deserve for this disgraceful spectacle, and throws in a few criminal charges for contempt under section 6O*  of the Royal Commissions Act 1902 for good measure.

*that’s 6 followed by letter ‘O’, not sixty…
