Sotloff’s pleas to Islamic State ‘caliph’

Pleas will fall on deaf ears

Pleas will fall on deaf ears

To learn that your child was in the hands of the savages of Islamic State would indeed be the worst possible situation in which to find oneself.

However, issuing ‘pleas’ to such people will achieve nothing – they are not capable of compassion, especially for the filthy kafir. Furthermore, I cannot help but feel that the tone of the statement leaves something to be desired, and may do more harm than good:

“I am sending this message to you, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi al-Quraishi al-Hussaini, the caliph of the Islamic State. I am Shirley Sotloff. My son Steven is in your hands,” she said in a video posted on The New York Times website. “You, the caliph, can grant amnesty. I ask you please to release my child. I ask you to use your authority to spare his life.”

Referring to Baghdadi as the caliph could likely be seen as controversial, as it suggests the group is gaining legitimacy.

Indeed so, and it lends credibility to the group’s claims.

“Steven is a journalist who traveled to the Middle East to cover the suffering of Muslims at the hands of tyrants,” Sotloff said.

I assume that the ‘tyrants’ she refers to are the US and its Western allies?

“Steven is a loyal and generous son, brother and grandson. He’s an honorable man and has always tried to help the weak. We have not seen Steven in over a year.”

Not sure Islamic State would appreciate that assessment of their strength…

“As a mother, I ask your justice to be merciful and not punish my son for matters he has no control over. I ask you to use your authority to spare his life and to follow the example set by the Prophet Muhammad, who protected People of the Book. I want what every mother wants, to live to see her children’s children, I plead with you to grant me this.”

Not quite. Muhammad did not ‘protect’ the People of the Book. He allowed them to remain non-Muslims in Muslim land (dhimmisubject to considerable restrictions and the payment of the jizya (tax) to their Muslim overlords. They were third class citizens at best, and the indulgence granted could be revoked at any time.

I am afraid that it is highly unlikely that this plea will have any discernible effect on the future of Steven Sotloff, and may, in fact, embolden Islamic State.

Do we plead with mass-murdering, religious zealots for the release of our children?
How do you plead with psychopaths?

  2. Regretably, they will probably kill Steven Sotloff for no more reason than they can, but not with impunity, they are no more than a crazed bunch of psychopaths the same as the world has seen before with the atrocities committed in the nameof the axis powers in WWII. One big difference, they regret their involvement and have done so for many decades, there will be no such capitulation from these ranting maniac Muslims.
